"FLIPPED," By Wendelin Van Draanen

Flipped is one of a all-time favorite young-adult novels and its 2010 film adaptation is equally captivating. I first encountered the book at 12 in middle school, and it instantly won me over with its heartwarming, romantic storyline. The novel’s nostalgic charm and the exploration of childhood to adolescence sparked my interest in young-adult fiction and creative writing.
The story revolves around Julianna (Juli) Baker and Bryce Loski, who meet as children when Bryce moves into Juli’s neighborhood. Juli falls for Bryce right away, but he’s initially uninterested. As they grow up and reach eighth grade, their feelings undergo a significant shift. Bryce begins to appreciate Juli’s true qualities, and Juli reassesses her long-held crush.
The alternating perspectives between Bryce and Juli provide a rich, multi-dimensional view of their evolving feelings. Van Draanen’s depiction of puppy love and the awkwardness of growing up is both relatable and endearing.
Flipped is highly recommended for readers of all ages due to its timeless appeal and feel-good nature. The film adaptation captures the essence of the novel beautifully, making it a classic worth experiencing.
